Paul Babeu, an emerging Republican figure and strong border defense sheriff, resigned from his position Saturday afternoon as Arizona co-chairman of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign for allegations of threatening deportation on a former lover.

According to The Arizona Republic, a Romney spokesperson broke the news of Babeu’s decision to remove himself from the campaign.

“Sheriff Babeu has stepped down from his volunteer position with the campaign so he can focus on the allegations against him. We support his decision.”

Babeu has been rocked by the allegations from The Phoenix New Times late Thursday evening, where a Mexican immigrant named Jose told the newspaper that the sheriff and his lawyer threatened to deport him if he revealed their several years relationship.

So, which part of this is the "sin" that causes him to need to resign from Romney's campaign? That the guy was gay... having sex... with an immigrant... or that it was while he was unmarried? Or all of the above?

In answer to your several questions - Yes. Oh, and the unasked question - the lover was not white. I think that may have been the biggest sin.

Well... if they passed same-sex marriage in Arizona, maybe the guy wouldn't be a closeted homophobe who feels the need to "sin" on the side.

with Santorums homophobia and hate ? it's only a matter of time before he's busted ! the only questions is how ...

cruising in a gay bar ?

snorting coke off his gay lovers rear end ?

in a parking lot/public bathroom getting/giving oral ?

wife comes forward and files it as part of a complaint for divorce ?

all of the above ?

I bet 20 on the snorting coke scenario !

GOP isn't a party, it's a psychosis.

They project all their darkest desires onto 'others'. How do you know what a GOPher's thinking? Listen to what they say about others. Limbaugh calling Michelle Obama 'fat'!?

They persecute others for their own 'sins'. You can always tell which GOPher's gay by how strongly they fight gay rights.

The charges of the sherrif threatening the lover with deportation seems much more relevant than the lover's sex or that he was born elsewhere.

It's especially bad here. We, (not me, I didn't vote for the guy,) vote this guy into the state AG office over a seasoned prosecutor (Felicia Rotellini,) because he's on the anti-illegal immigration political platform.

http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/azelections/articles/2010/06/20/20100620tom-horne-bankruptcy.html

And the man he defeated in the primary, Andrew Thomas? He's on his way to being disbarred by the state bar association for his actions when he and Arpaio went after county officials and judiciary with trumped up charges. This is the kind of @!$%# we deal with here.

The only thing would add to this recurring fiasco would be if the sheriff had been Arpaio.

Remember, Arpaio does provides PINK uniforms to his prisoners.

Actually, it's the underwear (t-shirts, skivvies) which are pink. The uniforms at the Maricopa County Jails are black and white stripes, with the exception of color coded sleeves. Red sleeves = violent, green sleeves = medical restrictions, purple sleeves = psycho and regular sleeves = unsentenced.

Most people don't realize this, but the County Sheriffs only incarcerate inmates who are sentenced for a year or less. The really bad guys, the killers and rapists and bank robbers and Methodists, they'll get sent to the State Prison instead for their long-term incarcerations.

That's not to say that there are no really really bad guys in the jails, but the ones whom they hold in custody are generally awaiting trial or sentencing for their misdeeds.

This is so hysterically funny, I have no idea where to begin. I hope they write a county song about this hypocritical goofball and they sing it at every gay tavern from sea to shining sea. I hope they make it the friggin' anthem of Cinco De Mayo celebrations accross the southwest. Closet-gay immigrant basher republican law enforcement officer blackmails immigrant lover. It just doesnt get any better than that.

Somebody say "Song"?

To the tune of "The Brady Bunch".

Here's the story of a guy named Jose'
he had a green card issued by the USA.
All he wanted was a friend, and a lover,
and yes he is quite gay.

Here's the story, of a cop named Babeu,
who was busy being Sheriff as we know,
he was a gay man, living in the closet,
even while out on patrol.

Til the one day our gay migrant met this fellow,
and they knew it wouldn't be a one night stand,
that they'd meet out in the desert dark and quiet,
to get to know each other man to man.

That's the way Babeu likes it man to man!

Don't get me wrong, folks. There's lots of funny here, but...yours truly isn't finding anything humorous with the sheriff's sexual persuasion or that of his immigrant lover. There's not a thing wrong or funny about being gay. But being a holier than thou hypocrite? That's funny.

Cop commits blackmail crime = hypocrite

Conservative republican man is a closet gay = hypocrite

Anti-immigrant public official having affair with immigrant = hypocrite

Seriously, the sheriff's sexual persuasion is his business. But his hypocritical politics vs. his hidden lifestyle and his law enforcement obligations vs. his alleged blackmail...wow, this dude is a mess. If his politics weren't built around passing moral judgement on others, I'd feel sorry for him.

Ian, I think there's a risk involved when public officials live a lie. After all, blackmail is a two-way street, and when sex is involved (especially with a foreign national) there's a risk that it could be a "honey trap".

A "honey trap" is when a tryst occurs in which the public official is desperate to keep things discreet (sound familiar?) and the trapper recruits the trappee for nefarious purposes.

Sheriff Babeu is (for the moment) the Sheriff of Pinal County. I know exactly where that is because it's about a 45-minute drive from my house. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, in the county right next door (that would be Maricopa County).

US Interstate 8 is a major trafficking route for Mexican drug cartels looking to move drugs through Arizona. Parts of I-8 are a mere hundred miles from the US Mexico border.

Wouldn't the drug cartels just LOVE LOVE LOVE (AMOR AMOR AMOR) to have a Sheriff in that area in their pocket? Danged straight they would!

Such secrets are begging for Honey Traps and as such, they risk compromising the safety of the citizens of this nation.

But, the probable fact is that he wouldn't have gotten elected in the first place had he been open about it. Personally, I don't care whether he is or isn't, it's the dishonesty about it that would prevent me from voting for him.

The biggest issue, or what should be for everyone, is that Babue and his lawyer threatened a person legally in this country with deportation under false pretenses, they blackmailed the lover.

Now the problem for this sheriff is that he votes for and is a volunteer with a political party that hates homosexuals and immigrants. Which means that the sheriff is living a life nearly the complete opposite of what the GOP/TP claim/proclaim as their platform.

After harping for months on Weiner sending photos to women, lying about it, and claiming he was hacked, so far there is no stories about BaBeu other than supporting his denial of the allegations. Babeu sent sexy photos, lied about it, and has claimed his site was hacked.

he was a guest on Hannity when he was attacking immigrants will he be asked to return now that he loves immigrants. not even a reference to the new story.

Nothing on Rush.

Paul Babeu would be wise to discard from his life the party that abandoned him and continues to demonize his lifestyle and everyone else that also are attracted to the same sex.

Paul Babeu IS a republican poster child for the republicans repulsive and discriminatory actions nazi-like ideology AGAINST the AMERICAN PEOPLE. Paul Babeu IS the republican's recent VICTIM.

This is so typical from the righteous conservatives. They preach on the side of "family values", demonizing anybody that is going against a "traditional family"-for that they mean a man married to a woman with several children-

However, we have seen many times that these people are the most deviant and hypocritical of all. They keep their facade, and try to present themselves as the soldiers of God against evil. How soon they fall on their own words.

Two of Sarah Palin's children got pregnant before they were married. We can see how good of a job she did on her own children, to be preaching on others. The Governor of Puerto Rico is the latest gay casualty. A righteous hypocrite against gays; some pictures of him turned out six months ago, having sex with not one, but several men at the same time. And the list goes on. Gingrich has the nerve to say the he "Asked God for forgiveness"- I wonder if he asked his two previous wives for that, considering he abandoned them when they got severely ill.

Democrats do not preach social sanctimonious rhetoric to others, so we don't have to give the impression that we are messiahs of puritanism, so there is nothing against our personal lives that is embarrasing or shameful.

The real problem, as we speak, is that several red states are passing dangerous bills that are geared to destroy citizen's rights. Under the pretense of being "advocates of God" The Republicans of Virginia have a bill right now in the senate that states that "Life begins at conception." If this passes as law, that will mean that stem cell research, abortion rights, and even birth control may change forever in this country. We must be vigilant that bills like this DO NOT pass as laws. The discussion should be that the citizens of Virginia MUST say no to this asinine bill.

The GOP: The new Christian Taliban.

If this isn't the lead story on all the evening news networks tonight, then there is absolutely with-out-a-doubt a conservative bias toward Mitt Romney. I mean, Geez...this has ALL the titillating elements of a fantastic lead news story. A handsome gay sheriff, a cute Mexican lover, abuse of power, a jilted relationship, all wrapped inside the presidential campaign.

I'm expecting heavy news coverage for this one.

A lot of folks on the right like to disparage and dismiss the New Times, (Village Voice Media,) for the sole reason of being liberal/left leaning; however, they have broke stories stories like this more than once. Then again, maybe that's the real reason. They also have a good archive of material on that worthless clown in brown Arpaio dating back to the late 1990's.

You call that left leaning? Calling the Phoenix New Times left leaning is rather like calling King Tut a little bit dead. The most damning thing for me about the credibility of the New Times are the rather lurid ads for thinly disguised prostitution. I'm no prude, I was in the US Navy for 8 years and seen most everything a sailor sees, but the Phoenix New Times ads are still way over the top.

Then again, maybe that's the real reason. They also have a good archive of material on that worthless clown in brown Arpaio dating back to the late 1990's.

We don't have the greatest luck with Sheriffs here in Arizona. How good is your memory, MC Resident? Remember who came before Sheriff Joe Arpaio? I do.

Sheriff Tom Agnos was driven from office in disgrace over the Tuscon Five, I'm talking about the Buddhist Temple Murders and good old Sheriff Agnos getting a hot tip (from a guy in a mental institution) about five guys in Tuscon he said shot the monks in the Wat Promkunaram Temple.

Under international pressure to solve this dastardly crime, Tom Agnos rounded up these unlikely suspects and proceeded to beat confessions out of them. All five confessed to murders they never committed under the hamfisted interrogative techniques of Sheriff Agnos and when it turned out that the confessions were both false and coerced, well, that was the end of Sheriff Agnos.

Yep, we get some doozies for Sheriffs. Our governors here in Arizona are about a parade of pathetic polecats too.

I've lived here on and off since the early 1980's, (being active duty, and then married to active duty kept me away until we came back for good in 2000,) and remember that it was the handling of the Temple murders that did Agnos in. The murders actually happened while I was stationed at Yokota (Tokyo;) but, I was back for a couple of years from 93-95 when I married my wife and packed up to join her at Offutt AFB (Omaha, and my second time there.) As the Internet expanded, so did my access to local information even when I wasn't here. Yes, the "good" politician has been few and far between.
